Macquarie Ridge Tectonics

Mike Coffin and Tip Meckel of the Institute for Geophysics and Reuben Reyes of NPACI at the
University of Texas are visualizing large 3-D data sets (stored in the TACC HPPS archives) to study
seafloor morphology and seismicity along the Macquarie Ridge Complex. Over the past six million
years, the Australian-Pacific plate boundary south of New Zealand has undergone variable amounts
of strike slip faulting and underthrusting accompanied by vertical displacements of the crust.
Tectonic processes such as subduction are accompanied by earthquakes at various depths (red-orange spheres).
